Age Difference Calculator

Find the exact age difference in seconds

An age difference calculator tells you exactly how much older one person is than another, in years, months and days. Enter two birth dates and the tool compares them, names the older person, and shows the full difference, together with the total number of days and the total number of months. It is useful for families, couples, friends, teachers and anyone planning a birthday surprise, because guessing ages from years alone often misses months and days.

Parents use it to compare siblings, partners use it to settle a friendly debate about who is older, and teachers use it to explain how calendars work. It is also handy for forms, family trees and anniversaries, where an exact gap matters more than a rough figure. The calculator works in your browser on any device, needs no sign-up, and is free to use.

How to use the age difference calculator

  1. Enter the birth date of Person 1 in the first date box. You can type the date or choose it from the calendar.
  2. Enter the birth date of Person 2 in the second date box.
  3. Press Calculate. The tool works out who was born first and how far apart the dates are.
  4. Read the main result first, then check the total days and total months if you need those figures.
  5. Swap the dates or change either date to compare a different pair. The order does not change the size of the gap, only who is named as older.

Enter full dates, including the year, and double-check the month and day before you calculate. A single digit wrong in the year can change the result by a whole year, while a swapped day and month can change it by several months.

Worked example

Take Person 1, born on 15 January 1990, and Person 2, born on 20 June 2000. Person 1 is older, because 1990 comes before 2000. Counting from 15 January 1990 to 15 January 2000 gives 10 years. From 15 January 2000 to 15 June 2000 gives 5 months, and from 15 June 2000 to 20 June 2000 gives 5 days. The difference is therefore 10 years, 5 months and 5 days. In total, that gap is 3,809 days and 125 months. Try these exact dates in the tool above and you will see the same result.

Tips for reading the result

Years, months and days are counted in calendar terms, not as simple divisions. That matters because months have different lengths and leap years add an extra day. A difference of 12 months is shown as 1 year, not as 12 months in the main result, although the total months figure still shows 12. If the two dates are the same, the tool says both people were born on the same date and the difference is zero. If you only need a rough age gap, the years figure is enough, but for birthdays, anniversaries and legal or school dates, use the full years, months and days result.

Frequently asked questions

1. Does it matter which date I enter first?

No, for the size of the gap. The tool always compares the earlier date with the later date. The order only decides whether Person 1 or Person 2 is named as the older person in the sentence at the top of the result.

2. How are months counted when the day of the month differs?

The tool counts whole calendar months first, then the remaining days. For example, from 15 January to 20 June, it counts 5 whole months, from 15 January to 15 June, and then 5 extra days, from 15 June to 20 June. This gives a result people can check on a calendar.

3. Does the calculator handle leap years?

Yes. It uses real calendar dates, so leap years are included automatically in the total days figure. The years, months and days result also stays correct, because it counts from one calendar date to another rather than dividing by an average year length.

4. What if both people were born on the same day?

The tool reports that both people were born on the same date, with a difference of 0 years, 0 months and 0 days. The total days and total months are both zero as well.

5. Can I use this calculator for dates in the future?

Yes, for planning. Enter any two dates and the tool compares them in the same way. It does not check whether a date is in the past, so you can also compare expected dates, anniversaries and planned events.
